
The amendment to Regulation 14 of ANNEX VI of the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (“MARPOL“) (also referred to as IMO 2020) came into effect on 1 January 2020 and set in place a new sulphur oxide (SOx) limit cap of 0.5 percent for marine fuel oils. This article provides an overview of the IMO 2020, options for compliance, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its implementation.
